Nutritionists, naturopaths and other
health professionals within the
complementary and alternative medicine
profession, place a lot of emphasis on the
health of the digestive tract in terms of maintaining our general health and well-being.
This is both unsurprising and logical when you consider that the digestive tract is where we obtain
nutrients from the foods we eat, which serve to nourish our bodies and fuel its many processes. It is
also where we excrete waste and, more importantly, toxins, which (if left in our bodies) can cause us
harm.
For example, the health of our liver, lymphatic system and immune system are all greatly affected by
the condition of our intestines.
Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue (GALT) is found in the intestines and comprises lymphocytes,
macrophages, Peyer’s patches and lymph nodes. It is considered to be the largest collection of immune
cells in the body. 70% of all antibody producing cells in the body are located in the GALT - this makes
your gut the most important part of your immune system. The GALT works tirelessly to
prevent unwanted micro-organisms (such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast and parasites) from entering
our bodies.
Unfortunately, many people suffer from poor digestive system health. There are a number of
digestive disorders (such as leaky gut syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and dysbiosis)
and inflammatory bowel diseases (such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), which cause
much pain and distress.
We believe that knowledge is power. Even where there is no known cure for a condition, having at least
the known facts can help to manage the symptoms. In particular, our view is that diet (and, where
necessary, dietary supplementation) can play a pivotal role in supporting digestive system health.
Digestive System Health
A healthy digestive tract supports a
healthy body
Did you know?
•
The most important part
of your immune system
is in your gut!
•
70% of all antibody
producing cells in the
body are located in the Gut
Associated Lymphoid
Tissue
•
Digestion begins in the
mouth, where food is
chewed, mixed with saliva
and the swallowed.
•
Saliva contains enzymes
that begin carbohydrate
digestion. It is also
antibacterial.
•
If faeces remain in the
colon for longer than is
desirable (i.e.
constipation), toxins will
be reabsorbed into the
bloodstream - this is called
auto-intoxication or self-
poisoning.
•
Digestive enzymes are
needed to properly digest
food. Cooking destroys
food enzymes, forcing the
body to make its own.
Over time, the body may
tire of this extra burden,
leaving it vulnerable to
digestive system problems.
